Reduced fertility is a widespread challenge, and up to a quarter of childless people who wish to have children have difficulty becoming pregnant. At the same time, the birth rate in Denmark is declining.
In 2024, a law extending the right to publicly funded fertility treatment for a second child entered into force (see country update from 1 December 2024 “New law grants free fertility treatment to have a second child” at https://eurohealthobservatory.who.int/monitors/health-systems-monitor/updates/hspm/denmark-2024/new-law-grants-free-fertility-treatment-to-have-a-second-child).
The Danish Government and Danish Regions have agreed to further expand access to publicly funded fertility treatment. From 2026, individuals and couples who have previously received assistance to have one child will be eligible for up to six publicly funded treatment attempts to conceive a second child, doubling the current provision.
